Slab City by Jon Ross
The Taube Museum of Art presents Slab City by Jon Ross. This exhibit will be on display in the Langer Gallery Oct. 4 – Nov. 10, 2023. Public reception Nov. 4, 5-7pm.
Pop Artist Jon Ross, originally from Minot, has been an art instructor for 9 years and an artist for several more. His work was traditionally acrylic paintings but has branched out into ceramics with this latest series.
“I’d like to think, like perhaps most artists, that the artwork speaks for itself. If this series did that though, I reckon that it would say I watch too much television, which I do but don’t need my work revealing my secrets. This series started out as an idea for a prank. Every Christmas season, which in my parents’ house starts the day after Halloween, my dad sets up a generic holiday village. I was looking at it late one night and wondered if I could make a house out of clay and sneak it in and see how long it would take my dad to notice. I lowkey considered myself to be a pop artist and decided on making the house from the Simpsons. I never did try sneak it in but really enjoyed the process of making a ceramic house. So, I made another one, and then another one. And several more and kind of just kept going. I ended up making 40 of them and haven’t decided if I am done yet.”
