Darlings, such quaint desperation from our local merchants today – though I must confess a peculiar fascination with their earnest holiday machinations. That bookshop on Main, bless their provincial hearts, dangling tote bags like carnival prizes. Though I did spy a particularly intriguing advance reader’s copy peeking out from behind their display of candy canes and cider – how deliciously incongruous.
But it’s that hoagie shop that truly captures the cultural moment – their “Pilgrim” sandwich a sort of fever dream of middle-American excess. Turkey and stuffing and gravy, all pressed between bread like some sort of culinary confession. Though I suppose if one must indulge in such things, better there than at that bakery with its pretentious “Brie-licious” concoction. Arugula on a sandwich in North Dakota – now that’s what I call magical thinking.
The whole town seems drunk on small business sentiment today. Rather charming, in a desperate sort of way.
